Monitor Ghosting vs. Motion Blur: How to Test and Fix It
You bought a high-refresh-rate monitor, expecting buttery smooth visuals. But when you spin your camera in-game, everything turns into a smeary mess. Or worse, you see weird glowing trails behind moving objects.
This is the world of pixel response times, and it’s where terms like “Ghosting,” “Motion Blur,” and “Inverse Ghosting” (Overshoot) come into play.

What is Ghosting?
Ghosting occurs when the pixels on your monitor can’t change colors fast enough to keep up with the moving image.
Imagine a white UFO moving across a black background. As the UFO moves, the pixels behind it need to switch from white back to black. If they do this too slowly, a faint “ghost” image of the UFO remains visible for a fraction of a second.
- Cause: Slow pixel response times (specifically Gray-to-Gray or GtG transitions).
- Visual: Smearing or trailing behind moving objects.
- Common In: VA panels (often called “black smearing”) and older IPS/TN panels.
What is Motion Blur?
Motion Blur is a broader term. It can be caused by:
- Ghosting (as described above).
- Eye Tracking: Even on an instant-response display, your eyes track movement smoothly while the screen updates in discrete frames (sample-and-hold). This mismatch causes your brain to perceive blur.
- Fix: Higher refresh rates (144Hz, 240Hz) reduce sample-and-hold blur. Backlight strobing (technologies like ULMB, DyAc, or ELMB) can almost eliminate it but often reduces brightness.
What is Inverse Ghosting (Overshoot)?
To fix ghosting, monitor manufacturers use a technique called Overdrive (or Trace Free, Response Time, etc.). Overdrive pushes more voltage to the pixels to make them change colors faster.
However, if you push too much voltage, the pixel shoots past its target color.
- Example: A pixel trying to go from Grey to Black might accidentally go to “Super Black” or seemingly “White” before settling down.
- Visual: A bright, glowing halo or “corona” around moving objects.
- Cause: Overdrive setting is too high.

- Clear: Ideally, the UFO should look sharp with minimal trailing.
How to Fix It: Tuning Overdrive
Most gaming monitors have an “Overdrive” setting in their OSD (On-Screen Display) menu. It might be labeled as:

- Response Time
- Trace Free (Asus)
- AMA (BenQ)
Finding the Sweet Spot
- Open the Ghosting Test and leave it running.
- Open your monitor’s menu.
- Cycle through the Overdrive settings (e.g., Off, Normal, Fast, Extreme).
- Setting: Off/Slow: You will likely see significant ghosting (trails).
- Setting: Extreme/Fastest: You will likely see inverse ghosting (bright coronas).
- Setting: Normal/Fast: Usually, the middle setting is the “Goldilocks” zone—fast enough to remove ghosting, but not so fast that it causes overshoot.
Pro Tip: If you use a variable refresh rate (G-Sync/FreeSync), the optimal overdrive setting might change depending on your FPS. Some modern monitors have “Variable Overdrive” to handle this automatically.
